Vitamins and Dietary Supplements - Do They Really Work? Learn the Fact From Fiction

Every year in North America the estimated amount we spend on vitamins and dietary supplements is billion and growing. So why do we spend so much? Is it even necessary? Or for that matter safe? Well to be honest you will never get a black and white answer, so what we need to establish is you have to make your own informed choice.

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

You have to wonder why in the western world where food is plentiful and cheap to purchase so many of us wake up each morning to have our daily does of health pills. In recent years they have been portrayed as a quick fix to get nutrients into your body without cooking boring meals and shopping for the correct foods every week. But a lot of people take dietary supplements as substitutes for medication such as St Johns Wort for depression and primrose oil tablets for women on their monthly cycle. Nutritional experts prefer the general public to invest time and money into cooking decent balanced meals instead of reaching for the vitamin bottle. However experts do claim that in some circumstances it is recommended to take supplements, cod liver oil and omega 3 fish oil being a good example.

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

The American Medical Association has in recent years turned more towards vitamin supplements. The evidence of scientific studies over the last 30 years has shown that they can significantly help the nutritional value for your body. Vitamin B9 s considered one of the most important supplements for women when pregnant, but this works the other way too. High levels of vitamins A, C and E over an extended period of time are linked to heart disease and certain forms of cancer.

One of the main reasons why someone would need more dietary supplements is if an individual has been through major surgery, they will need more nutrients than the average person to help repair their body. There are also certain metabolic disorders and diseases of the digestive organs meaning you would need to consume certain supplements to counteract the difference.

The best thing to do if you are in any doubt is speak to your doctor, for example if you have a skin complaint your doctor may advise you to take a supplement and give you the facts on what ones actually work. Doctors are not like the doctors from yesteryear where they were quite ignorant of dietary supplements and their positives, they are now fully up to speed with the good the bad and the ugly.

One of the big talking points in nutrition is - Do you get enough vitamins and nutrition if you are a vegetarian? Well the short answer is no, but it is not black and white. For instance there is a big difference if you are a standard vegetarian where you do not eat any meat at all compared to a vegan. Vitamin B12 is only found in food from animals, these would be described as meat, milk and eggs. Without consuming these foods you will almost certainly not be getting any vitamin B12 so you would need to counteract this with a vitamin. You will also be lacking in calcium and zinc as these supplements are mostly found in animals, but the vegans will come off worse as they do not have cows milk or eggs. It is important you have a healthy balance whatever your preference to vegetarianism.

The body has evolved from our ancestors but we still do need vitamins in our system as our ancestors would have centuries ago but they obtained them from meat, whether you like the idea or not the human body is designed to eat meat.

Moderation is the key when thinking of any dietary supplement, if you take too many vitamins it can even be described as dangerous to your health and if you have a distinct lack of any vitamins or the right foods with vitamins in them your body will suffer as a result. No one wants to have to live with sallow skin, brittle hair, weak fingernails, bad breath etc they are just a few of the side effects of not having the right vitamins whether it is a dietary supplement or part of your regular eating habits.
