There is much talk about the health benefits of cod liver oil supplements. In fact, many health-conscious individuals seem impressed with this oil that they consider it to be a health "superfood" because it is rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
But is it safe to take on a daily basis or does it have too much Vitamin A?
Vitamin Nutrition Supplement
How does cod liver oil differ from other omega-3 fish oils? Do they provide the same health benefits?
Cod Liver vs. Fish Oil
Cod liver is considered to be one of the most concentrated omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. We hear so much of omega 3 fatty acids that provide so many health benefits to the heart, brain, joints, etc.
Cod Liver is Rich in Vitamins A and D
Aside from omega 3 fatty acids, it is also rich in two fat-soluble vitamins, namely vitamins A and D. As you know, vitamin A is important for healthy skin and proper vision, while vitamin D is essential for strong bones and teeth, regulation of blood sugar and better immune system function.
Since cod oil a rich source of vitamin A and D, some people consider it to be a better supplement than fish oil. But is it really?
More Harm than Good? - Dangers of Cod Liver vs. Fish Oil
Surprisingly, although this kind of oil is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, its vitamin A and D content could potentially pose a risk as far as health is concerned. Here are some reasons why:
1. Cod liver oil has high levels of vitamin A.
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin and tends to remain in the body for an extended period of time. The significant amount of vitamin A in it may accumulate in the body to a toxic level, which can pose as a health risk especially for pregnant women.
2. Cod liver has high levels of vitamin D.
Vitamin D can be sourced naturally from exposure to sunlight. It is also fat-soluble so it tends to stay in the body for a while. This is a wonderful vitamin to take but if you are already taking it in a multi-vitamin or supplements that has enough D then you might get too much.
3. Cod liver oil may contain high levels of toxic mercury.
Just like fish oils, it supplements from unreliable health companies may have been sourced from heavily-polluted waters rich in industrial waste. You have to be a careful shopper.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids without All of The Vitamin A
If you want to enjoy all the health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids without the worry about potential Vitamin A toxicity and possible contamination, stick with pharmaceutical grade fish oil. A good fish oil supplement from a reliable company will provide you omega 3 goodness that provides therapeutic benefits. This does not mean there is anything "wrong" with cod liver oil supplements. It just means be aware of your Vitamin A intake and spend some time to do your research and think it over before deciding to switch.
