All Vitamin Supplements Are Not Created Equal

While getting all your essential nutrients from natural foods is ideal, it may not be practical in today's society and many people turn to vitamin pills to supplement their diets. Make no mistake about it however, vitamin supplements are big business and not all manufacturers have your best interests at heart.

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

There are thousands of supplements to choose from and consumers spend billions of dollars each year - many never get even a small fraction of their money's worth.

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

How do you choose a vitamin supplement that won't just go down the toilet?

There are 3 types of vitamin supplement delivery systems. Capsules, Liquid, and tablets. The trick is to pick one that dissolves properly and does not just "pass through" thus wasting your hard earned money.

The liquid would be the best, but unfortunately there are not many choices out on the market. Plus, the can be inconvenient and they taste like cough syrup. But, they are great if you can't swallow pills and are good for kids as well.

Tablets are the most common form of vitamin supplement. They are made by mixing in an organic or inorganic cement and compressing them into shape. For the pills to dissolve properly, an organic cement should be used but this costs more and as you can imagine, many manufacturers skimp on this stel. There are also coated tablets that resemble little candy-coated M&M's. These are very commonly found in the one a day cheap drug store vitamins.

Capsules are gelatin containers that dissolve quickly and in most cases the best choice. Because they're not compressed like the tablets, you will typically have to take two of them to equal one tablet.

One important thing with vitamin supplements is that you want to make sure you absorb as much as possible, otherwise you are just wasting your money. Studies have shown that individual vitamin isolates found in supplements are only about 10% absorbed while vitamins directly from a fresh plant source are 77% to 93% absorbed. Minerals have an even lower absorption rate - 1% to 5%. But, from plants like raw broccoli, the minerals are 63% to 78% absorbable.

The reason for this difference in absorption is that in nature, each vitamin and mineral molecule is attached to a protein molecule. That's why you must take your vitamin supplements with meals - unless stated otherwise on the label. During digestion, only about 10% of the vitamin and mineral molecules, aided by enzymes, will attach to the protein molecules found in your food allowing them to be absorbed and used by your cells. Without these accompanying proteins, the body will see the vitamin isolates as a foreign substance and filter it out. That's why you might have noticed bright yellow urine after you take a vitamin - that's your bodies way of getting rid of chemicals it thinks it can't use.

When selecting a vitamin supplement, make sure it has adequate amounts of the vitamins and minerals you want. Remember only about 10% of what is in the supplement will be absorbed. Look for the BP (British Pharmacopoeia) or USP (United States Pharmacopoeia) designation on the label. You will find the USP or BP initials next the the vitamin and this designation means the vitamin isolates are of the highest quality and are easily dissolved in the digestion process.

When looking at the minerals section of the label, look for "chelate" or "chelated". This indicates that the minerals are attached to protein prior to being added to the supplement. This increases absorption by 400% to 800%.

Look for a supplement with a "food base". This is concentrated plant material to which the vitamins and minerals are added. Supplements with a food base will contain enzymes and nutrients that boost the absorption of the vitamins and minerals. This is probably the best type of vitamin you can buy but the tablets will be larger and you may have to take more of them.

Nutritional supplements can never take the place of food and should not be used as a crutch to supplement a poor diet. The best recipe for health is to eat a nutritious and healthy diet which can be supplement when necessary.

How Does Your Multi-Vitamin Stack Up?

A 10 point checklist for quality supplementation. It's official. According to a new report from The Journal of American College of Nutrition [1], since 1950 there is a significant vitamin drain in America's fruits and vegetables. But how do you choose a multi-vitamin to supplement this loss in nutrients?

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

You need a system of checks and balances to evaluate the maze of different supplements on the market today. Not all vitamins are manufactured the same way. How can you evaluate your vitamin for potency, purity and bio-availability?

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

With the help of Lyle MacWilliam's Nutrisearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements use this checklist to compare your current multi or evaluate a new one.

Ask yourself these questions:

Is my vitamin delivered in a single dose? (a one-a-day type supplement simply cannot provide the level of potency needed for optimal nutrition without being to large to even swallow) Are the potency levels of the nutrients listed high enough to provide optimal nutrition without compromising safety? Are the ingredients listed provided in their most bioavailable form? (mineral salts are not absorbed as well as chelated minerals) Is the safety of each ingredient thoroughly researched and evaluated? Does your vitamin manufacturer meet US and Canadian pharmaceutical-grade guidelines - not food-grade guidelines - for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)? Most all vitamins found in your local grocery store are only food-grade. Is my vitamin potency guaranteed for a specified shelf life? Is your vitamin formulated to meet pharmaceutical standards for full disintegration and dissolution? Is my vitamin independently tested and guaranteed for potency and safety? Is my vitamin manufactured in house?(scientist/manufacturer) or farmed out to the lowest bidder?(marketer/contractor) Is my vitamin free of ingredients that may have toxic effects (pre-formed vitamin A and iron)?

If you answered yes to all the questions on this checklist, good job! You have an exceptional multi-vitamin and are receiving immense health benefits from it. If not, you should study my website For most of us consumers it's just not practical to consider all of these points simply from the product label. That's why you need a comprehensive guide like The Nutrisearch Comparative Guide To Nutritional Supplements by Lyle MacWilliam. Taking 6 years to compile and now in it's soon to be released 4th edition, The Comparative Guide To Nutritional Supplements compares over 1500 nutritional supplements on the market today in the US and Canada. This guide is the only comprehensive, independent, fully updated guide on nutritional supplements available to consumers. Of the 1500 supplements meeting review qualifications only 4 received the Nutrisearch Gold Medal of Achievement. Of those, 3 you can only get from a physician or health/exercise professional. The 4th is the one I recommend and it's at a price lower than the other three.

Warnings

Take caution with manufacturers of liquid or spray types of delivery methods. Different vitamins and minerals have different absorption rates no matter if they come from tablet, liquid, powder, or food. For example Calcium has a pretty standard absorption rate around 25-35%. The form does not generally make a significant difference. The bottom line is - a well-made tablet provides a very effective delivery system for pharmaceutical medications. Most medications come in a tablet form. This is because they have been found to be the easiest and most efficient delivery system for medications. Why would vitamin supplements be any different? Does anybody doubt that an aspirin tablet is less effective because it comes in a tablet? Tableted products can be more advantageous to take, simply because more active ingredients can be taken in one tablet (almost 3 times as much as a capsule and much more than liquid or spray). The stability is generally much better. Generally time-released supplements are not beneficial and not necessary. In fact many time-released supplements contain coatings that decrease the absorption rate of fat-soluble vitamins. Nutrient deficiencies do not develop by the hour or overnight.

What Does ORAC Stand For?

Developed by chemist and physician Dr. Guohua Cao the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is a laboratory analysis that provides an overall measure of a food's antioxidant activity. The higher the ORAC score, the greater is the food's antioxidant capacity. ORAC tests are often used to compare the antioxidant activities of different foods (fruits, vegetables, juices, wines, etc.).

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

Two problems exist with this test:

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

ORAC analyses are not extremely precise. Different laboratories conduct ORAC testing in different ways, and often produce markedly different results.

What does ORAC stand for?

Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is a laboratory analysis that provides an overall measure of a food's antioxidant activity. The test works by challenging a food product with an oxidizing agent, and then measuring the overall capacity of that food to resist oxidation. The higher the ORAC score, the greater is the food's antioxidant capacity. Several such measures of "total" antioxidant activity have been developed. None are definitive. But ORAC has gained the widest acceptance in commercial circles.

ORAC tests are often used to compare the antioxidant activities of different foods (fruits, vegetables, juices, wines, etc.). Such comparisons can be valuable, but they do carry limitations. First, ORAC analyses are not extremely precise. When a given food product is tested multiple times in a given laboratory, variation in ORAC score from one sample to the next is often on the order of 10-15%. Second, different laboratories conduct ORAC testing in different ways, and often produce markedly different results. And third, different orange juices, for example, that were manufactured and diluted in different ways, and stored under different conditions, can actually have very different antioxidant activities, such that it is difficult to assign a meaningful ORAC score to orange juice in general.

Nevertheless, comparisons based on ORAC testing can be meaningful when like products are compared (for example, when comparisons are made between a number of fruit juices or fruit-based products); when all ORAC analyses are conducted in a single, qualified laboratory using the same analytical methods, and importantly when the ORAC values reported pertain to equal amounts of product (for example, all the ORAC values are presented on a per ounce or per 100 gram basis). Under these circumstances, large differences in ORAC score (particularly differences on the order of 3-10 fold) indicate meaningful differences in true antioxidant activity.

When considering ORAC as a basis for comparison make sure these 3 important controls are considered:

Comparison is made between like products i.e. fruit vs. fruit, juice vs. juice Analyses are conducted in a single, qualified laboratory using the same analytical methods Product comparisons must be for equal amounts
Warnings

Some manufacturers of certain juice supplements are using ORAC as the sole analyses of the product being superior to tablet supplements. Let's take a further look.

First off remember that just because it sounds like a juice supplement would be more "easily" absorbed that is not generally the fact. Different vitamins and minerals have different absorption rates no matter if they come from tablet, liquid, powder, or food. Most medications come in a tablet form. A well made tablet has proven to be highly effective for pharmaceuticals. Why would a vitamin supplement be any different? Indeed, if liquids were simply absorbed directly in to the bloodstream, as some supplement companies claim, would the same happen when you ate soup? Bottom line - the science just isn't there when it comes to liquid supplements. The supplement industry itself originated on account of published studies in the scientific literature that contributed to the knowledge and insight into nutritional elements. With the hundreds of studies connecting calcium and vitamin D supplements with bone health, it is hard to dispute that tableted supplements provide an effective delivery system. If tablets weren't any good, why did the researchers get positive results? If liquid or spray supplements are so much better, why are they rarely, if ever, used in published scientific research?

Keep in mind that we are speaking of multi-minerals and multi-vitamin formulations. There may be certain products that may be appropriate in a liquid (just as some medications are liquid). However, these are the exceptions, not the rule.

Liquid supplement promoters often contend that liquids are better because they don't contain fillers (excipients used in tablets for disintegration, form, binding, coating, etc). That is a ridiculous argument since liquid supplements require even more "other" ingredients such as emulsifiers, solvents, preservatives, stabilizing agents, coloring, flavoring, etc. The more ingredients in a liquid supplement, the more excipients that may be required.

Lastly, as rated by the 4th edition Nutrisearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements top 13 vitamin supplements of 1500 rated - none are in a liquid form.

Good Food Good Health - Vitamin K

Hello everybody

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

Vitamin K

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

We all know how important eating a well balanced diet is, to maintain a healthy array of all the vitamins that are essential for the body to go about doing it's tireless work, day in day out, yet we all seem mystified when we become run down or ill, from either having been living off fad diets or instant food full of preservatives and additives.

I look at our 'good food good health' slogan as a way of life, we are what we eat, so if you want your body to run smoothly we need to eat nutritiously - well you would not run your Porsche on two stroke fuel and expect a smooth ride or optimum power, heaven forbid, your body works exactly the same although obviously you can change your car every few years, to date medical science is not quite up to that yet!!

Vitamin K is not one of the better-known vitamins, although it plays a crucial role in our well being. Until recently it was thought that it was only beneficial in helping blood clot, now if you ask me that is pretty important as we do not want to bleed to death.

Vitamin K has two main forms- phylloquinine (vitamin K1), which is also known as phytonadione and menaquinones (vitamin K2).

Phylloquinine K1 makes up 90 per cent of the vitamin k in a typical diet and is found in leafy green vegetables such as cabbage, lettuce, spinach and broccoli etc and also vegetable oils.

Menaquinones can also be obtained in the diet from different products such as meat, cheese and fermented foods.

Our bodies naturally produce Vitamin K from food in the small intestine by bacteria, but there is no way of telling how much this provides us of our daily needs.

Studies have shown that Vitamin K is now known to assist the body significantly in many ways and is being hailed as a natural wonder drug.

K1 and K2 play major roles in bone health, by empowering secondary modification of the protein osteocalcin that is required to bind calcium to bone matrix. It also produces GLA -'glue' like amino acid that helps keep calcium in the bones. So for postmenopausal women vitamin K is important for helping to keep osteoporosis at bay, as studies have shown that by taking a supplement of 45mg of vitamin K daily for 3 years bone density actually improved.

Worryingly, it has been found that people who have a deficiency in Vitamin K have been linked with bone loss and arterial calcification.

Because of this research has been carried out on rats with exciting results. It was found that by feeding rats a K2 rich diet for 6 weeks, further hardening of the arteries was prevented and a 37 per cent reduction of existing hardening. As currently no treatment exists for hardened arteries, cardiovascular specialists are extremely excited if this finding has the same effect on humans and the future of the disease, studies pending on this are looking promising.

Hardened arteries - arterial calcification causes the walls of blood vessels to lose elasticity, making the heart work at elevated rates to pump blood around the body. This extra pressure on the heart can lead to heart attacks, by up to 50 percent more!

Hardening of the arteries is not only through poor diet it can also happen through injury and a simple small knock is enough, this process of calcification in the arteries can take months or even years, causing inflammation to the wall of the blood vessel and through this floating cholesterol and debris consequently gets stuck to the site and this is where calcification - hardening happens.

So if we all eat a well balanced diet of good food, including those greens that a lot of people dislike, to make sure we maintain our vitamin K levels and the benefits for good health are greatly increased. Supplements are also available to boost your intake.
So like we said previously good food is good health.

Vitamin Supplements - Is a More Expensive Multivitamin Brand Worth Your Money?

Are vitamin supplements really worth your money? Is a more expensive multivitamin brand better than the cheaper ones? I think you may find the following information fascinating and life-changing, so keep reading.

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

I've been researching ways to improve my health natural for over half a decade. I was always interested in natural health, because I felt like there was something wrong with the medical establishment.

Vitamin Nutrition Supplement

There are a lot of multivitamin brands you can choose from, and you are right in asking the question whether spending more money is worth it or not. To be honest, I went for the cheap supplements in the beginning.

In hindsight, I regret it, because even though they were cheaper, they were a waste of money. If I would have spent some extra money, I would have experienced the actual benefits that everyone is talking about.

When I finally switched from cheap supplements to something more in the mid-range, I could really feel it. I even recommended the supplement I use now to my girlfriend and mother, who are both raving about the effects they are feeling.

Is a more expensive multivitamin brand worth your money? My answer would have to be definitely, BUT you have to do your research and educate yourself, because there are many expensive supplements out there that are scams.

We as consumers have to stay up-to-date with what is going on in the natural supplement industry. It is a booming industry, which means every company is trying to get their share of the pie.

This leads to bad products and poorly-managed companies.

How to Find the Best Multivitamin Brand

With all that said, I'm sure you're wondering how exactly you can find a multivitamin brand that makes a difference in your health.

It all comes down to the ingredients. Look out for chemicals and look for natural substances, such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, adaptogens, herbal extracts and specialty nutrients.

If you want more information, you can always visit my website.
